Leadership Roles

As a founding faculty of two successful medical schools: the UCF College of Medicine, and UofSC School of Medicine Greenville, I served in many leadership roles, ranging from a member of the curriculum committee as a chair of program evaluation and assessment subcommittee, a course director, to a director of the student success program, as well as a senator representing my colleagues in the Faculty Senate. These leadership roles provided me the opportunity to experience many facets of medical schools academic mission, including LCME accreditation, students support, curriculum, assessment, faculty professional development, admission and pipeline program.

Director

Academic Success Program

As a Director of the Academic Success Program, my role is focused on the following areas: 1) support for learning and skill development; 2) oversee the peer tutoring program; and 3) deliver sessions during M1 and M2 orientations.

  1. Support for learning and skill development: I analyze medical students’ performance and interview them to identify deficiencies in students’ knowledge and skills with regard to priority setting, development of metacognitive, self-regulation and time management skills, as well as perception and understanding of the medical curriculum. Thereafter, students receive necessary support that align specific strategies with students’ needs and learning styles. Students receive coaching about their metacognitive knowledge and awareness, self-regulation skills, and time management and organizational skills.

  2. Peer tutoring program: This program includes different types of near-peer tutoring: A) one-on-one tutoring; B) small group tutoring; C) large group tutoring; and D) weekly USMLE Step 1 tutoring for M2 students delivered by M4 students. In addition, a weekly tutoring for all M1 modules using USMLE Step 1 question formats.

  3. M1 and M2 orientation sessions: I deliver these sessions to explain the academic support offered by the school, the peer tutoring program, and the support provided for the preparation for USMLE Step 1 examination. In addition, the administration of Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) questionnaire.

My leadership role in the development of the students success program, involves successfully transforming a concept to reality, developing strong rapport with stakeholders, and building teams with capabilities to reach the intended goals.
